The Korea Best Driver organization (전국모범운전자연합회, 全國模範運轉者聯合會, jeongung mobeom unjeonja yeonhapoe, Korean language website) is a group that promotes safe driving within the domestic taxi industry. Despite 모범 in 모범택시 (deluxe taxis) and 전국모범운전자연합회 (Best Driver Program), these are unrelated. The association has over 26,000 members and branches in a number of large cities. You will see members behind the wheel of taxis and also participating in transport-related volunteer activities as they are required to participate over a certain threshold to sustain their membership.
The outside of their vehicles will have a red, yellow, green strip on them which is visible on a sticker at the sides and rear of the car and sometimes the entire vehicle is also wrapped in these colors.
Not as common as the red yellow green stripes, these taxi cabs sometimes have a special sign on the top of the vehicle.
Within these taxis you’ll see medallions with the word 무사고 (無事故, musago), which literally means “without car crash” and the number of years without a crash will be written going from 10, 15, 20, 25, to 30. The first three are silver and the last two are gold in color.
While they are typically displayed in a prominent location, these medallions are actually designed to be worn over the left breast as part of a uniform. The full uniform includes a white cap, white gloves, light blue long sleeve shirt, and black pants. Images copyright Korea Best Driver.
